The Atomic Bombshells
Women's Roller Derby Team
A strong, recognizable brand identity for a roller derby team that embraces the team's geological location and history through an illustrative logo.
GRAPHIC DESIGN / BRAND IDENTITY
OVERVIEW
Design a full brand identity and create a guideline book for the roller derby team, The Atomic Bombshells. The identity includes primary and secondary logos as well as typography, usage, and collateral pieces to represent the team appropriately.
TEAM BACKGROUND
For this project, I was not required to choose a women's roller derby team that was already existing. So, The Atomic Bombshells is a made-up team and therefore does not have any existing brand identity.
CREATIVE RESEARCH
I decided that The Atomic Bombshells are a team from New Mexico, USA. Their fierce attitude and willingness to blow up the competition is what earned them their reputation of being the best team in their league.
Starting with a team that I had the power to create, I needed to do some research into building this team's brand. Who were these women? What made their team special?
I find history so fascinating, so I started to think about the past events of New Mexico and the American South-West. I became inspired by the World-War-Two-era nuclear testing they did in the 1940s since it fit with the team's name; The Atomic Bombshells.
From there, I began thinking about what elements of this history I could use for a logo. A literal bombshell felt like an obvious and easy option, so I pushed myself to think further about the area itself and turned to nature for inspiration as well. I found the perfect mascot for The Atomic Bombshells; an armadillo.
Armadillos are native to the area and their shells are nod to the name of the team, "Bombshells." The animal's shell is it's armor; similar to the pads and armor the roller-derby athletes wear.
DESIGN PROCESS
Before going digital, I sketched out ideas on paper for a primary logo.
LOGO IDEATIONS
Having chosen a direction with the aramdillo, I developed a digital version as well as different typography options. Once the primary logo was finished, I created a secondary and tertiary logo.
Never have I ever been so concerned with the anatomy of an armadillo
